Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.” [Psalm 27:7-8 ESV]
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. [Hebrews 4:16 ESV]
Righteous are you, O LORD, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive? You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit; you are near in their mouth and far from their heart. [Jeremiah 12:1-2 ESV]
Prayer is not something you do from memory. Reciting words is not prayer. In fact, we don’t even have to utter words to pray or know what we need to pray.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. [Romans 8:26-27 ESV]
Prayer is seeking Him. (The Psalm 27 verse)
We can come to Him boldly, with confidence – to receive mercy and grace. Confidence, we are God’s children, and He wants us to speak to Him.
As we talked about a few Sunday’s ago…He’s a big enough God to handle whatever it is we need to talk about. He already knows what we know, what we feel, what we think. He’s okay with the complaints…as the Jeremiah verses point out – we can complain, He’ll remain righteous but will listen. He wants us to want to talk to Him…about everything.
Prayer. Communication with God…communion with God, all three persons of the Trinity. We’re speaking to the Father, with the Son as our intercessor, and the Spirit helps us pray. Prayer is union with God. Prayer is entering into the presence of the All-Mighty, the Great I Am, the Creator of the Universe…and calling Him – Abba.
He tells us over and over and over and over again…He wants us to talk to Him. He’s listening. We are to “seek His face,” to abide, to be one with Him…and prayer is an integral part of our being with Him. He’s there for us, ready to listen to our praises, our complaints, our joys and our sorrows.
Prayer. A chance to speak with the Creator. A chance to be still and know who He is.
