…Hide & Seek – you’re doing it wrong…

Squirrels. Funny critters, at least that’s what I think. Several weeks ago I was smiling and laughing at about a half a dozen of the fuzzy clowns. I paused in my driveway, on the way to my mailbox (across the street), to watch them scamper, and play (they were also across the street). After a few minutes, I headed to the mailbox…they scattered.  All but one. This guy hid behind the mailbox’s wooden post. There was a slight problem though…the post wasn’t wide enough. His tail was fully visible as it twitched. I made it a few steps closer before he panicked and shot across the yard and up a tree.
Funny critter, but when it came to hide and seek…he was doing it wrong. (To be honest, it could have been a she…never got close enough to tell.)

It was a few minutes later as I chuckled over the poor attempt at hiding that a thought hit me…isn’t that how I (and nearly everyone else) is with God. We’re disobedient…but we have some misguided notion He’s not watching. We may know He’s everywhere, but we don’t really think it through…or believe it.  We often think, or hope, or maybe just remain in denial, that God’s not paying attention.  At least that’s what our behavior seems to show.

Hide & Seek…we’re doing it wrong.

Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD. [Jeremiah 23:24 ESV]

Or, we realize what we’ve done wrong and we become embarrassed.  We pull away – thinking we’re running away.  We try to hide.  We kind of behave like Adam and Even in the Garden….

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. [Genesis 3:8 ESV]

Hide & Seek…Adam & Eve did it wrong…and we’re doing it wrong.

Thankfully for all of us…God doesn’t kick us out of the “game” for doing it wrong.  He calls to us, just like He did to Adam and Eve…

But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” [Genesis 3:9 ESV]

He knew where they were; He was giving them the opportunity to respond…to come back to Him.

It’s comforting (and humbling, and a little unnerving) to know, no matter what we do He is with us…that we can’t really hide from Him.

And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. [Hebrews 4:13 ESV]

…and, as believers, we are never separated from Him.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? … nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 8:35, 39 ESV]

He is there to help us do the whole hiding thing right…

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah [Psalm 32:7 ESV]
You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. [Psalm 119:114 ESV]

And that’s when we’re doing it right.

  1. I’m glad that He IS watching. I find this more comforting than unnerving. I need the help! I need the direction! I need to know that Someone sees what I’m just not seeing, and will give me that heads up! He is the lifter of my head! I also love how He points things out in nature. So awesome! Thanks for sharing your inspiring thoughts and insights Kenn!
