…surrounded…

What are you surrounded by? Or to be more accurate…what surrounds you that you notice?

We are all surrounded by many things — demands, stress, love, the needs of others…to name a few. We see, focus, and acknowledge some things that surround us, but are often oblivious to many others.

One thing we’re often blind to…God’s presence at all times. Just like Elisha’s helper (2 Kings 6:15-19), fear overtakes us because we’ve not seen, focused on, or acknowledged God’s presence. We forget we’re a little triangle encapsulated in a larger triangle (if that doesn’t make sense….go here).

He has promised never to leave us or forsake us. He is faithful. He is there at all times. We can boldly enter the throne room to receive mercy and grace in a time of need (Hebrews 4).

The world tries hard to distract us. We, in the weakness of our flesh, do an excellent job of distracting ourselves. Sometimes it’s worry, stress, or fear. Other times it’s the more subtle things in life…the “good” things, family, church, or something else that gets us busy…and we see those things, but lose sight of God.

The great thing is He’s still there; we only need to open our eyes. Take the time to be still and know.

Know that He is our refuge…that He surrounds us with shouts of deliverance.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” [Psalm 91:1-2 ESV]

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah [Psalm 32:7 ESV]

What is a shout of deliverance? One shout I know about…the cross. Thunder rolled, the curtain was torn…and He delivered those who believe. He delivers…watching over us, caring for us, providing for us.

He surrounds us with steadfast love:

Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! [Psalm 32:10-11 ESV]

Steadfast. Solid, not wavering, dependable, always there…a love we can count on no matter what. A love that should inspire us to shout for joy, praising His Holy Name.

He surrounds us forevermore:

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore. [Psalm 125:2 ESV]

As a follower of Christ, I can rest in Him, and He is with me forevermore. Nothing can take us away from His love.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. [John 10:28-29 ESV]

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? [Romans 8:31-32 ESV]

Surrounded. Might as well give in and surrender…it’s the best place to be. Surrendered to Him.

  1. Amen. 😊 If I wasn’t surrendered to Him I wouldn’t be able to let go of fear when something comes up that threatens to steal my peace and joy. So I’m glad that He helps us to surrender.

  2. Lol… He smacks us upside the head indeed, but He’s still pretty gentle about it. 🙂 I’m still learning the gentleness and patience part. I’m getting better, but only because He’s such a great teacher, and He IS patient. I’m panicking less. That definitely helps in the patience department. Trusting Him goes a long way. 🙂
